Notes from America with Kai Wright

CHAPTER

The Rise of the Modern Homeless Crisis

The modern homeless crisis began with the closing of psychiatric hospitals and incentives for single room occupancy spaces. The Hirth Act is in 2009 was the first successful legislation to really address this crisis. In New York housing costs have gone up by 35% I think in the last two years um home costs up by 50% just a whole front in the last couple of yearsYeah i mean it's not a surprise that this has happened we've built a country based around tax incentives for suburbanization for people who own cars and that have essentially taken away those benefits from people who live in multifamily housing, predominantly black and brown.
