Scientific research shows that a visualizing exercise can be really powerful on its own. People who imagined lifting heavy objects every day for six weeks were ten per cent stronger, compared to participants who hadn't done any kind of imaginary lifting at all. The brain was recalibrating what it fought the muscles could achieve, and then that was causing it to recruit more muscle fibres.
