Shashana: Disability was the thing that I kind of walked away most interested in. What do human beings do when they bump up against things they can't change or can't control? And from there, it was also entwined with death. Sam: As I got into it more and more suffering death, wanting to change, not wanting to changed, this whole stew kind of begat palliative medicine. Shashana: We live in denial of our own mortality and do everything we can to avoid thinking about it.
Sam Harris speaks with BJ Miller and Shoshana Berger about preparing for death. They discuss the difference between palliative care and hospice, the tension between getting the most out of life and not clinging to experience, planning for death while still healthy, the importance of an advance directive, navigating the healthcare system, pain control at the end of life, assisted suicide, psychedelic therapy for end-of-life anxiety, and other topics.
