Prisons in Brazil - A Brief History
Brazilian prisons are notorious for being some of the toughest and most violent in the world. Araroquara Prison was one of the roughest, with brutal bashing occurring daily. Dozens of prisoners were sometimes held in a single small cell where there was not even enough room to lie down. Guards would hand over the keys to internal locks to whichever inmates were running the show.
