Sufi mystic martyr Al-Halaj was cut to pieces by his tormentors in 922. The theme of passionate love will play a role in later Sufis, including the great Persian poet Arumih. Another major figure of the earlier Sufi tradition was Abu-Sayed ibn Abir-Khair. These men and women were recognized as sages admired for their total devotion to God.
