The Astronomer's Chair

The first chapter lays the groundwork for the idea that chairs are physiognomic devices. In other words, they indicate character. They indicate what is e more than meets the eye. And essentially, at the end of the day, it's about the persona of the astronomer. So we know in that chair what persona is being depicted for that audience. The difference between the chaire and the unchaired will also become important later on in the book.
