What's the Benefit of Pessimism?
Pessimists are ubiquitous, as I say, throughout intellectual culture. It seems to be the way to get attention. One of the reasons for this is that there's a certain thrill to hear about disasters. We like going to see disaster movies and it's exciting to see deep impact or Armageddon. A lot of intellectuals are doing today, worried about the metaphorical asteroid. But name your academic or intellectual and they will be concerned about a particular problem. That could wipe out civilization,. especially if they're a scientist of some kind or a philosopher.
