Reports of this kind of activity were quite taboo and those that did reach those in leadership positions would sometimes dismiss these incidents as the work of counter-revolutionaries. The individual became little more than livestock in this planned economy, a resource to be used like any other resource. In a system where reality was intentionally avoided, in favour of promoting a sense of progress even in the face of disaster, the system set up by the Chinese Communist Party leadership is just a terrible, terrible failure.
