The Free Energy Principle
The brain has a boundary that separates its internal state from external states. Karl calls his concept free energy, because he argues that trying to minimize free energy is an elegant and tractable way for any complex system to up date its priors. Free energy isn't real about energy in the form of work or heat per se, his free energy is about information and entropy. The minimization of free energy is just the minimization of surprise. And surprise here just means how different reality is from expectations.
