The Mexican Community in the United States
The Mexican community in the southwestern U.S. included immigrants as well as people of Mexican ancestry whose families had been there since way before California even existed. In Los Angeles and other cities, the Mexican population overwhelmingly lived in tight-knit communities known as barrios. The same policies that enforced segregation of black residents in other parts of the country enforced segregation of Mexican and other Hispanic and Latino residents in the American Southwest.
