The Inquisition of Giordano Bruno

Giordano Bruno was executed in Rome as a heretic in 1600. Pope Paul III founded the Roman Inquisition in 1542 to keep people on non-reformation side of Protestant Reformation. Once that juridical mechanism gets going it's extremely hard to stop it. The mandates spread so that love potions and more vernacular casual expressions of not quite Christianity came under their purview.
