Augustine lays down a lot of the foundation of medieval Latin Catholic thought and theology. On the other hand, he's a part of the system that was later outlawed or delegitimize. The confessions are one of the very earliest first person texts. In some sense, I think it's the earliest one that really feels like an autobiographical narrative to us.
