How Much Voice Science Do You Need?

In a perfect world, your teacher is an amazing teacher as well as a great singer. Sometimes singing really too well can not be appropriate in certain lesson situations. This teacher has to have empathy and a connection and an understanding. And then there's the debate of voice science. How much voice science do you need? i know amazing teachers who know very little about voice science.
