CHAPTER

The Constitution of the United States - Civil Rights and Immunities

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that blacks, both free and enslaved, were guaranteed no rights. Chief Justice Taney stated that blacks were not citizens because at the time of the Constitution was drafted, they were considered as a subordinate and inferior class of beings. The ruling was superseded and overruled by the passage of the 13th and 14th Amendments in 1865 and 1868 respectively. This was the legal foundation underlying Martin Luther King Jr.'s moral leadership to transform America.
