Peter Singer wrote an article in 1972 called Famine, Affluence and Morality. He asked the question: Do you save a drowning child or your nice shoes? In this case, he says, for about a hundred US dollars, they can buy enough food to save a child. But if that money were given to Oxfam or Unisurf, it could probably save more than one child.
