The History of Milk Sickness
Milk sickness doesn't come from a microorganism. At least two different plants are believed to cause this type of poisoning. Cattle and other animals that eat these plants can develop a condition called trembles, which is marked by trembling, refusal to eat, seizures and ultimately death. This also causes a person's breath to have a distinctive acetone-like odor.
It took a while to figure out the cause of milk sickness. One woman often gets credit for solving the mystery, but does that story hold up?
