Mildred, a German Academic, Was a Successful Academic
Mildred's sister, harriet, who was my great grandmother, did not want mildred to entangle herself in germany any more. The united states was in the middle of a depression, and their own family suffered greatly. And here was mildred, at this point, an academic, if she still had not yet gotten her ph t, but she was basically all but dissertation. She gave lectures about american literature in the united states just to pay for her ticket to get back to germany. So they were just very confused by her behaviour and begged her to stay and she refused,. But she would not explain why.
