Third Nephi 1824 says, therefore, hold up your light that it may shine into the world. I like these two. One salt is a preservative, like you said, keeping things from decay and then a light can be that enlightening influence on other people. So not only are you fighting against sin, but you're also a positive influence for the rest of the earth. And third Nephi just perfectly puts the two together how he is the light of the world.
