The Elephant in the Closet
In Matthew, he puts this last discussion as the final word that Jesus has with them. He's not referring to what do you think of my last name? What's your concept of the Messiah? Whose son is he? They cannot answer because everybody is calling this guy the Messiah and he's right there in front of them. In essence, he says, let's get to the real question: Do you believe I am the spiritual divine Messiah? And then they just shut up tighter. It is the perfect culmination of hypocrisy and things like that.
