The Land Use Wars in Scotland
Pitlockry was a small cluster of hamlets before victoria, and then it became this romantic vacation spot full of turreted and gabled victorian stone buildings. The railroad connecting edinburgh to inverness passes pitlockery, and it becomes a sort of spa town,. A place to go and bathe and fish and enjoy the whisky. Now, this brought money into scotland, and there were many benefits, but it also led to land use disputes. And actually, small farmers called crofters began the first sort of resistance movement in the late victorian era, trying to fight back against this encroachment on their traditional use of land.
