A group called Veterans Action Network claims to help veterans make a difference in politics. It spent almost all of its money on fundraising, but it paid several hundred thousand dollars with John Connors's firm for political consulting. The operation is mimicked on a much larger scale by four new organizations that are started in 2017,. They're all 527 nonprofits that like Veterans Action Network, they play on these conservative causes and raise huge amounts of money.
A New York Times investigation has found that a group of Republican operatives used robocalls to raise $89 million on behalf of veterans, police officers and firefighters.
