A messenger pretending to be Aries told Proxinos and Cliarcus that if they didn't post guards on the bridge across the Tigris, Tisaphanis would destroy it during the night. Not one enemy soldier approached the bridge that night though, so at daybreak they crossed it with extreme caution. When the enemy approached and did not attack them, the Greeks must have felt that they had been duped by the messenger the night before. But once they were in the interior beyond the Tigris river, the Persians managed to manipulate the fears of CliArcus by convincing him that his own army contained troublemakers who wanted to remove him as commander.
