Mount St. Helens - The Largest Debris Avalanche Ever Recorded

On May 18th, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted with a force equal to 10 to 50 megatons of TNT - the equivalent of 25,000 atomic bombs. Hot rock and debris shoot out of Mount St.Helens at speeds of 300 miles an hour. The eruption produced a dense plume of ash 16 miles into the sky that could be seen from South Dakota.
