In 1944, at the age of 69, Carl Jung suffered a heart attack that brought him to the brink of death. His wife Emma moved into the hospital and slept at his bedside. For three weeks writes the biographer Frank McLinn, Jung hovered at death's door. Even in his delirious state, Jung himself had an awareness of the nearness of his own death. I had reached the outermost limit, he says, in memory's dreams reflections. And do not know whether I was in a dream or an ecstasy.
