The Big Sioux River's Rise and Fall
In 2019, a year of big floods across the Mississippi watershed, the Big Sioux River twice broke stage records. The effort to straighten the river's bends has caused mud to accumulate in certain stretches, lifting river stages. A warmer climate holds more water, which can lead to bigger blasts of rain and more frequent flooding. Under worst case scenarios, the river's discharge may increase 60% by the end of the century.
