The prisoner's dilemma is a thought experiment in game theory. It shows that the most rational decision based on probability would be to act selfishly. But paradoxically, it also shows that you would both do better if you both acted unselfishly and quote unquote like, irrationally. And there are some real life examples and applications of the prisoner's dilemma.
