The Importance of Affective Realism
Lisa Barrett's theory of constructed emotion says that instances of emotion are generated by the brain. The key idea is that everything you feel is based on predictions from your knowledge and past experience. Emotions aren't hardwired, but interoception and affect are. This might seem like a benign example, but if you're in a position of power, engaging in affective realism can harm others.
