The Vostok 6 Mission Scores Yet Another First for the Soviet Space Program
Valentina Tereshkova is the first woman to travel into space. She was part of Sergei Kodorov's Vostok 6 mission on June 16th, 1963. It will take until 1982 for the second Soviet woman, Svetlana Sabitskaya, to make it into space. Her flight also marks the end of the Vostok program as funding cuts mean a single cosmonaut can't go to the moon.
