After the Bronze Age Collapse

Tides of History

CHAPTER

The Past Isn't a Story

Structuring a story requires us to pick and choose the things we talk about. We can't talk about everything or give everything we do talk about equal emphasis. Because we know what's coming at the end, that shapes the way we present what came before it too. No good ending comes out of the blue. There always needs to be a build-up in order to have a payoff. Yet the past isn't actually a story and collapse isn't actually the end. The collapse is the climax, the Danoument, the final act. Failing a story that ends in a collapse makes this tendency glaringly obvious.
