The Fed's Limitations on Treasuries

The Fed cannot is not permitted to buy Treasuries from the Treasury. The dealers left out have to give the Fed better prices or they're going, you know, not, they're going to lose their status. They don't make any money on it, but they do it as an entree into the market for the largest institutional clients. So it's a very clever thing for the Fed to do this. It gets very good prices. And it's kind of a loss leader for these dealers.
