The kind of writing i do involves being, to quote a isiah berlin, the fox and the hedgehog. You need to be able to connect history and philosophy and feminism, for me, and sensuality and india. And how did i cultivate that skill? As you say, i was introduced, after writing, to all the big american writers. Katiachaa is a must read if you are an indian food writer. I read bikram doctor's columns religiously. I read harold macgee, who wrote an encyclopaedia about food. A while in gor made, one of the pleasures was to be exposed to food writers. Fusia
