Theodore Dornau and the Frankfurt School
Theodore Dornau was a Jewish intellectual working within the Institute for Social Research, commonly referred to as the Frankfurt School. He saw swastikas hung and paraded across the streets of Germany after Hitler's rise to power in 1933. While he could conceive of the Nazi takeover connected to the general social and cultural decline produced by late-stage capitalism, he could not conceive of how this remarkably incompetent, irrational, and virulently anti-Semitic form of governance could do anything but collapse on itself.
