Schostakovich initially offered the first performance to Yevgeny Mervinsky, who turned it down. The conductor Kiela Condrashin eagerly took it on. By this point, though, an official campaign against Yevtushenko had begun. He was accused of moralizing and of making Jewish suffering more important than the Soviet people during the war.
