Volunteer art teachers put on jade green smocks with the red cross insignia and marched into veterans hospitals ready to get to work. It didn't go so well, we were called a bunch of society women and eager bever volunteers. The hospitals already had occupational therapists on staff who were not too pleased to see a bunch of artist types toting modelling clay and yarn around the wards. They were like, we get it. You have time on your hands. How about not on my time and not on my ward? But dot was undeterred.
