Investing is a lifetime of learning and investing to build wealth over very long periods of time. I think index funds are a perfectly good way to go here. The S&P 500 Spiders SPY is a great way to go. For a stock I will throw in Berkshire Hathaway which is a collection of wonderful wonderful businesses kind of acts like a mutual fund but it's an individual stock.
