Syntax and Prescriptive Grammar
Syntax is one of the more formal areas, some areas of linguistics. It's related to grammar and rules that distinguish grammatical from ungrammatical sentences. Prescriptive grammar is saying that this is a good sentence and this is not a well formed sentence so you shouldn't speak in this way. In syntax generally linguists don't actually care about what speakers of a language think is good. That would almost be a part of sociolinguistics which we'll get to.
