The Role of Serotonin in Depression

serotonin is involved in a wide variety of functions including mood regulation, pain processing and homeostatic mechanisms. There are seven families of receptors for serotonin and only one of these is ionotropic. The highest concentrations of 5-HT are actually produced in the GI tract. It also has a role in the cardiovascular system where it may cause vasoconstriction or vasodilation depending on the receptor type.
