The english partially rescued their flag, ironically, through the same vehicle that threatened to take it away. The cross of saint george flew from windows, vans, motor bikes and was emblazoned on tea shirts, hats and scarfs. Here was an excuse and a space in which you could fly the flag of your country without people assuming the worst about you. It has taken several decades of globalization, but people are slowly waking up to the fact that one of its effects is to push aside national identity and local culture simultaneously.
