The Importance of Understanding the New Testament
You have to do the work of thinking into what the New Testament meant in its context. This is why older generations of clergy always had a copy of Josephus on their shelves. Even though he gets some things muddled, there's so much that he tells you about what it was like being a Jew in the first century. You can learn an enormous amount from going back through him or the Dead Sea Scrolls and discovering the history in the middle of which we find Jesus and Paul.
