When we're talking about the operating system in today's world where we've got 2,500 nodes that are out there running in this microservice world what do we actually mean? What do you mean? Well you've got a lot of layers right personally we talk about user level in general we mean operating at the unprivileged levels in the microprocessor versus kernel level which is operating in supervisor mode or ring zero. In SMM mode there is unseen software that is executing underneath effectively the hypervisor There is then software underneath SMM mode underneath SMM there's the Intel management engine the ME and the ME runs in again somewhat loosely specified contexts with software that is yet deeper in the system.
