The Importance of Mentorship

At age 28, 29, in 1971, I joined the Treasury Department on what was referred to as the tax legislative counsel staff. The Arab oil embargo took place in 1973-74 and I was asked to help create the federal energy office to deal with the embargo. In 1974 when the embargo was lifted, Secretary Schultz came into my office and said, we're going to nominate you to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. You were the youngest to ever have that role. If he were here, my professor would say, among other things, I don't know why I said what I did. But he pipes up, Jerry Parsky ought to do that.
