Rousseau's Non-Reactionary Critique of Modernity

Rousseau offers the first compulsively non-reactionary critique of modernity that's nostalgic but doesn't look back towards some kind of aristocratic ruralism or Christianity. And it's where I think actually sometimes the Marxists get anarcho-primitivism wrong, because they want this return to pre-modernity. The Unabomber line here is that the biggest problems with civilization are actually caused by the technology and myth of progress. So far as we understand the left to be progressive and believe in progress, there's a reason to be very hostile to certain dreams of enemy.
