The Desert Lines of the Andes
The naska are most famous for the hundreds of remarkable patterns and mages that they drew in the landscape of the coastal deserts. Some of these vast patterns are nearly 400 meteres long, or the length of four football pitches. They were invisible from ground level, but could be seen from sharply rising foothills and mountains that rose out of the desert. We don't know the full significance of these lines, whether religious or to mark the positions of the stars at certain times of the year, or simply as ostentatious expressions of wealth and power.
