The Peasantry and the Enlightenment

In pre enlightenment france, the peasantry was not part of the political process at all. But with mass print and a rapid rise of what we now know as the middle class, public sphere began to emerge. Public sphere is based on 'communicative rationality' says habrmas. As modernity has gone on, people have been engaging in the public sphere less and less.
