i think past econta e l a paul a is more agnostic about that. We're not in charge of or shape or governing or moulding or making our future selves. And so the big mistake that sets up the paradox and makes it seem like self creation is impossible, is that we assume that if there's going to be any relation of continuity between the earlier and the later self, the earlier one has to be the authoritative one. i'm thinking, why was i that na, that pitiful human before? There's just no way to solve that problem.
Where do our deepest personal values come from? Can we choose those values? Philosopher and author Agnes Callard of the University of Chicago talks about her book, Aspiration, with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. Callard explores the challenge of aspiration--who we are versus who we would like to become. How does aspiration work? How can we transform ourselves when we cannot know how it will feel to be transformed? Callard discusses these questions and more in this provocative episode.
