In 1796, Burr made a failed bid for the vice presidency He ran as a republican though. He maintained alliances within the federalist party Despite his loss other republicans recognized his ability to marshal votes in the north. In april 1800 New York held an election with national implications. Without new york's 12 electoral votes jefferson had no clear path to the presidency. Many federalists who hated jefferson began throwing their support behind burr considering him the lesser of two evils This didn't worry many republicans because they expected burr to stand down and announced that he would not accept the presidency Or compete against the leader of his party.
