I was basically in postdoc limbo for about nine years, including a lot of time in Britain and a year in Germany. Incredibly hard at that point to get any kind of academic job if you were buying as a Darwinian. There are plenty of jobs I applied for where I know I didn't get them because people on the search committee had read Gould or read other critiques of evolutionary thinking. But you know, that's a price of admission. If you want to get involved in a new intellectual movement that's a bit controversial, you cannot plan on having a sort of easy mainstream career that pleases everybody.
