Is Paternalism Excessive?
Historically, physicians were ovally paternalistic in a way that doesn't fit with our modern understanding of patient autonomy and shared decision making. Up until the 19 fifties and thei early 19 sixties, paternalism was carried to a degree that we would consider very excessive to day. Now paternalism has become a dirty word. I think obviously it's old contextual. When people come to us, they come to us for our paternalistic advice. They are notex s in this. The issue of paternalism, however, as you say, the pendulum has swung.
