The pay your dues philosophy, the idea that boss had to put up with bulshet abuse and finally succeeded, is pervasive in traditional systems. As work dominates more of people's waking lives, some work places feel like they can get away with demanding a lot more and giving less. 74% of respondents reported experience saing abusive behavior or harassing behavior in their first job. And i think that that speaks too, speaks to the level of toxicity, honestly.
