In 515 BC, one of Darius's wives, Atossa, the daughter of Cyrus, developed a tumor on her breast. She pledged that she would convince her husband to allow him to visit his homeland. The next day, 15 Persians plus Democities, as well as the ship crews, went off on a reconnaissance mission along the Attic or Peloponnesian coastline. But along the way they were shipwrecked, on the coast of Iapgea, and enslaved there. A Tarentine exile named Gillos managed to rescue them and brought them back to Darius. Thankful for what he did, as a reward, Gillos sought help from Darius
